Ambroise Pare
Ambroise Pare, as regarded as the “Father of Medical Surgery”, was born in 1510 AD in Bourg-Hersent near Lava, France. Many
surgeons gained experience in their early years by serving in wars. At his early years, Pare was a barber surgeon. A barber surgeon
was an important, high-class job in medieval Europe. Generally, they were charged in taking care of the soldiers after a battle or
war. In fact, barbers and surgeons worked together in those days. Often, the barber surgeons were regarded as the nurses of the
wealthy people (kings, queens, etc…) Ambroise Pare served for royal kings like; Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX, and Henry III. After
serving these royal important people, he became an official doctor (with a certificate from the royal Kings). Cauterisation was
common treatment used by many surgeons to seal wounds. When Pare was still working as a barber surgeon, he ran out of boiling
oil (type of cauterisation). The genius Pare decided to use a mixture of egg yolk, alcohol, oil of roses, and coil of pine wood
(turpentine), and he got a better result than Cauterisation! This invention was his most important. Pare had many great
accomplishments in his life, though some were not so accomplished. Like, he created a new type of way to seal blood vessels using
silk ligatures. Unfortunately, this led to death of many people because the blood vessels were blocked, and that caused infections in
the wound. So, it would’ve been better if Pare sterilised the equipment and knew how to cure the infection. On the other hand, his
great accomplishments were like making his famous book “Les Oeuvers in 1575. It ensured how his techniques and ideas spread in
Europe. Ambroise Pare’s great achievements were listed in his book; like how he made the egg yolk recipe treatment, promotion of
ligature of blood vessels to prevent hemorrhage, designed artificial eye & ribs, advanced obstetrics, and published many books.
Pare’s greatest accomplishment was the spread of surgery techniques throughout the barber surgeon community, to elevate
surgery status to an professional level. This is the story of Ambroise Pare, as regarded “The Father of Surgery”.
