Al-Zahrawi is one of the world’s most famous surgeon scholars, but largely forgotten by many. He’s known as the “The Father of
Surgery” in the Middle East. Abul Qasim Khalaf Al-Zahrawi (known in the west as Abulcasis) was born in 936AD in Zahra, Cordoba,
Muslim Spain. He lived most of his life in Spain and Saudi Arabia. Al- Zahrawi served as a military ruler for Al Mansur, a court
physician, a dentist, and a surgeon for the rest of his life. He was recognized as the medical genius of Islam. Zahrawi’s greatest
achievement was his medical encyclopaedia that he wrote called “Al Tarif”. It was divided into 30 parts, with 1,500 pages and 200
pictures. It was translated into Latin, and into most of the European languages. "Al Tarif" explained every surgical operation that
can be made in our bodies. In fact, his 30th volume was the most influential because it showed the famous descriptions of the skull
fractures; that were damaged from swords in battles. In fact, “Al Tarif” showed us how to strip varicose veins; which is a technique
we still use today. “Al Tarif” was in use 1,000 years after it was published. In fact, some techniques in “Al Tarif” are still used today. In
medicine, he was the first to discover the unusual disease “hemophilia”, and the causes of it coming. This disease was going to
cause the decline of the Golden Age because a large number of people died, but Al Zahrawi changed history.
In the map below, it shows the city were Al Zahrawi was born in.
